Early yesterday, Tuesday, September 28, 2010 around 12:45AM, officers from district D-4 (South End) arrested suspect, Kevin Ashton, 48 of Jamaica Plain and charged him with Armed Robbery, Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon, and resisting Arrest.

Officers were on patrol in the Boylston St. area when they observed the suspect sprinting on Boylston St. across Mass. Ave. towards Belvidere St. all the while looking over his shoulder. Officers believing the suspect to be of unlawful design circled the block and approached the suspect walking on Belvidere Street. As officers were approaching the suspect, they observed that he was removing a black jacket that he was wearing. Once close enough to the suspect, officers (who were in plain clothes) identified themselves and the suspect immediately exclaimed, “I didn’t do nothing!” The suspect then discarded his jacket and took off running.  The suspect was pursued by officers and caught and detained on Belvidere St. by St. Cecilia’s Church.

Once stopped, officers realized that the suspect matched the exact description of a man that had robbed the Subway located at 1222 Boylston Street. At that robbery, officers learned that the suspect entered the store with a knife just before closing and held the knife to an employee’s stomach and demanded that the employee open the cash register. The victim complied with the suspect’s request at which point the suspect emptied the cash register and fled out of the store. It should be noted that there were two customers in the store at the time that the suspect committed the armed robbery who followed the suspect but lost sight of him on Mass. Avenue.

The victims, along with several other witnesses, were brought to the location of the suspect and they positively identified the suspect as the person who had robbed the store. The suspect once arrested was found to be in possession of a large amount of money consistent with the money which was taken from the cash register. Officers were also able to recover a knife on Mass. Ave. near Boylston St. which was identified by witnesses and victim as the knife used by the suspect during the robbery.
