Suspect Arrested for Firearm Possession

Yesterday evening around 7:48PM, officers from the Youth Violence Strike Force (Gang Unit) assisted by officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) arrested suspect, Deandre Townshend, 18, of Dorchester and charged him with, Trespassing, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Assault and Battery on a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest.

Officers were on patrol in the area of Ferndale and Norfolk Streets when they observed the suspect who is known to them carrying a bicycle frame and tire that were not connected. Officers, having engaged the suspect in conversation with the suspect without incident in the past, approached him in order to talk to him. Officers approached the suspect and immediately upon greeting the suspect, he took off running and dropped his bicycle frame and tire. Officers followed the suspect as he ran and scaled several fences and ran through yards as he attempted to evade them. As the suspect continued to run from officers, officers heard a loud bang consistent with the sound of a metal object striking the ground. Officers continued to pursue the suspect and a lengthy foot pursuit caught up with the suspect. The suspect fought officers and actively resisted arrest before he was able to be placed in handcuffs.

Once in handcuffs, officers returned to where they had heard the sound of metal striking the ground and there located a loaded handgun. Search incident to arrest of the suspect allowed officers to recover several rounds from his pocket which were matched the caliber and type of the gun that was recovered.
