Passerby Alerts Officers to Assault in Progress

This morning around 2:15AM, officers from District D-14 (Allston and Brighton) were on patrol in the area of Harvard Ave. and Cambridge St. when they were flagged down by a motorist and told, “There’s a guy lying in the street and he’s all bloody!” Officers were then directed in the direction that the suspects had walked.

Officers quickly responded to the victim who was lying in the street with blood covering his face. The victim told officers that two guys had had gotten in his face and beaten him up by punching and kicking him and provided a description of the suspects. Officers broadcast a description of the suspects and within a short time assisting officers stopped two individuals matching the suspect description, both of whom had blood on their shirts, sneakers and hands.  The suspects were detained and returned to the scene where they were positively identified by two independent witnesses. The suspects, Michael D. McIver, 31, of Littleton and Steven R. Kainnard, 30, of Allston were arrested and charged with Assault and Battery and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon.

The victim sustained severe facial injuries including a broken eye socket, a dislocated shoulder and multiple scrapes and bruises from the assault.
