Lieutenant Detective Gregory P. Long

Commander, Homicide Unit

Lieutenant Detective Long was appointed to the Boston Police Department as a Police Officer in June of 1996. He worked on patrol in Area B which included Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan. While assigned to District B-3, he was assigned to the Anti –Crime car which was tasked with concentrating its’ efforts in areas that were experiencing an increase in violence and property crimes.

Lieutenant Detective Long was transferred to the Youth Violence Strike Force in April of 2001. While at the Youth Violence Strike Force, he was tasked with identifying gang members and reducing gang violence. He participated in long term, multi agency investigations that culminated in the arrest and prosecution of several violent street gangs and their members.

In June of 2004, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to District B-3. While at B-3, he worked as a Patrol Supervisor tasked with overseeing the District B-3 Anti- Crime Units. Lieutenant Detective Long directly supervised these units and concentrated on areas that had experienced increases in violence and property crimes.

In June of 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. He was assigned to District E-18 which encompassed the neighborhoods of Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale and Jamaica Plain. While assigned to District 18, he worked as a Duty Supervisor.

In June of 2008, he was transferred to the Youth Violence Strike Force and was assigned Commander. As Commander of the Youth Violence Strike Force he worked with many law enforcement agencies, community groups and religious representatives in an effort to stem gang related activity and violence.

In June of 2009, he was transferred to the Homicide Unit and was assigned Commander. He was rated Lieutenant Detective in December of 2009. He oversees all homicide, suspicious death investigations as well serious assault investigations that could result in death. He is also tasked as Lead Investigator of the Firearm Discharge Investigation Team which is responsible for investigating all Officer involved weapon discharges.

He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Westfield State College and a Juris Doctor Degree from New England School of Law.
