At about 9:13pm, on Monday, September 15, 2008, officers from Area E-13 (Jamaica Plain) were on patrol in the area of Parker Street when they heard what sounded like gunshots. Officers responded to the scene and learned that a 17 year-old black male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds was rushed to Boston Medical Center. The victim was later pronounced as a result of his injuries.In connection with this incident, officers arrested Elbert Newson, 19, of Dorchester and charged him with Possession of a Class D Drug (Marijuana) and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
At approximately 9:20pm, officers made an on sight drug arrest, across from 18 Notre Dame St, in Roxbury. While responding to the above radio call for a person shot, officers were monitoring additional responding units involved in a motor vehicle pursuit and subsequent foot chase, in the area of Academy Rd. and Dimock St resulting from the above shooting incident. Officers were advised of a description of a suspect seen running from the suspect motor vehicle, towards 40 Dimock St. Officers began to set up a perimeter in the rear of 40 Dimock St, near Notre Dame St. While in this area, officers observed a black male matching the suspect description exit from a vacant lot across from 18 Notre Dame St, jogging, sweating, and breathing heavy, gasping for air.
Officers began to follow the individual as he walked down Notre Dame St, towards Bragdon St, where officers were assisted by an additional unit, who was able to stop the individual and conduct a threshold inquiry. While performing a pat frisk for officer\’s safety, an officer felt a loose, crunchy material, inside the individual\’s right front pants pocket, that the officer believed through his training and experience to be consistent with the feel of marijuana. Officers removed the item and discovered a greenish vegetable like matter, believed to me marijuana, unpackaged in the suspect\’s pocket. Officers identified the suspect as Elbert Newson and he was subsequently placed under arrest for Possession of Class D.
Mr. Newson fit the description of the person fleeing from the motor vehicle being pursued after the initial shots fired incident mentioned above. As result of information developed, officers were also able to charge Newson with unlawful possession of a firearm.
