A Letter from Police Commissioner Ed DavisFor approximately nine months, the Boston Police Anti-Corruption Division in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Attorney’s Office have been investigating allegations of criminal activity related to a member of the Boston Police Department. As a result of an exhaustive investigation, Jose Ortiz has been arrested on drug-related offenses.
Jose Ortiz has been immediately suspended from the department pending his termination hearing, which is scheduled for next week. Ortiz is 45 years old. He has been a member of the Boston Police Department since 1986. His last assignment was District D-4 (Back Bay, South End) and his rank is patrol officer.
I would like to commend the hard work and dedication of the individuals assigned to the Boston Police Anti-Corruption Division, who have the difficult task of policing our own.
Today is a sad day for the Boston Police Department. Becoming a Boston Police Officer and serving the City of Boston is a privilege. Any individual who abuses their authority or takes advantage of that privilege will be dealt with swiftly and aggressively as is evident in the case of Mr. Ortiz. Ortiz disgraced his badge and dishonored his brother and sister officers.
Police misconduct is an attack on community trust and strikes at the very core of community policing. It is reprehensible and our department will not stand for it.
I will not allow the shameful actions of Jose Ortiz to smear the hard work and dedication of the more than 2,000 officers who conduct themselves professionally, diligently and with integrity and pride every single day. Good cops don’t like bad cops. As a matter of fact, individuals such as Ortiz inspire a department to be and do better. I commend the tenacious and honest members of the department for their great work. I appreciate their commitment to public safety and the quality of life of the citizens we serve.
I realize many of you will have a lot of questions related to this development and I hope to soon be able to answer them all for you.
