THREE ARRESTED SMOKING CRACK IN CARAt approximately 5:44 pm on Thursday, March 29, 2007, members of the District A-7 (East Boston) Drug Unit were in the vicinity of Border St. and White St. when they observed a white Jeep Cherokee pull over with its engine running. Officers observed the driver – later identified as James E. Smith, 38, of Stoneham – smoking from a metal object with a long hose, and believed that the suspect was smoking an illegal substance.
The suspect was then observed passing the object to a person sitting behind him, who was later identified as Miguel Ortiz, 36, of Stoneham. The vehicle traveled down Border St. toward Condor St. Officers approached the Jeep while it was stopped at Condor St. and Meridian St., and ordered the driver to put the vehicle in park and shut it off. The driver ignored the order and drove the car forward. Officers repeated the commands to shut off the car, to which the driver responded only with a blank stare. The front seat passenger, Cheryl Smith, 36, of Stoneham, repeatedly told the driver to “take off” and “keep going, don’t stop”. Officers recovered the metal pipe with tubing and found it to contain a residue that they believed to be crack cocaine. A bag with seven small pieces of rock believed to be crack cocaine was also found. All three suspects were placed under arrest and charged with Possession of a Class B Drug (Cocaine).
ARMED ROBBERS DON’T GET VERY FAR
At approximately 12:20 am on Friday, March 30, 2007, District C-11 (Dorchester) officers were dispatched for an armed robbery in progress. Officers operating an unmarked cruiser turned off the headlights as they turned onto Bushnell St., where they observed three males matching the description of the suspects. All three men were handcuffed, and officers found a firearm lying on the lawn where the suspects had been spotted. The suspects and the weapon were positively identified by the victim, who described the robbery to officers.
He stated that he went into his backyard and when he was walking down his driveway he saw three black males. After a verbal exchange that escalated into a shouting match, the victim threw his black nylon briefcase at the suspects and ran in the opposite direction on Verdun St., towards Carruth St. The suspects fled with the briefcase going the other way on Verdun St. The victim then called 911 while following the suspects and reported their whereabouts until he lost them cutting through a backyard. The path of the suspects was searched by officers and the victim’s briefcase was found with its contents emptied out. The bag and all its contents were returned to the victim. The suspects, Howard E. Thompson, 18, James Jamison, 18, and Kyle A. Jackson, 18, all of Dorchester, were all charged with Armed Robbery with a Firearm.
DRIVER REFUSES TO STOP FOR POLICE
At approximately 12:50 am on Friday, March 30, 2007, officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) were on routine patrol, and were responded to a radio call for a group of males on the corner of Stanwood and Normandy acting suspicious. Upon arrival, officers observed a brown car idling near the corner occupied by four individuals. As officers approached in their marked cruiser, the car pulled away from the curb. Officers activated their lights and siren, but the driver turned down Blue Hill Ave. and sped up, attempting to flee.
At the corner of Devon and Columbia, assisting officers pulled onto Devon St. with their siren and lights activated. The suspect attempted to swerve around the cruiser and slammed into a parked car. The driver attempted to drive around the cruiser again, driving into the cruiser while officers were still inside. The suspect attempted to flee on foot down Devon St. where he climbed a fence and attempted to cut through the backyard of a house on Geneva St., where he was apprehended.
Jayvon J. Lassiter, 23, of Dorchester, was arrested and charged with Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer with a Motor Vehicle, Disorderly Person, Resisting Arrest, Leaving the Scene of Property Damage, Failure to Stop for a Police Officer, Operating Negligently to Endanger, and Operating without a License. When Mr. Lassiter was asked why he didn’t stop for police he stated, “I hate cops.” The three passengers were field interrogated and released.
