Billboard Used in Fight Against Gun Trafficking

\"billboard_header.jpg\"At a press conference yesterday, Mayor Thomas Menino, Police Commissioner Kathleen O’Toole, and STOP Handgun Violence unveiled Boston’s newest initiative in the fight to combat illegal gun trafficking.
The Message “STOP TRAFFIC: Background Checks Stop Crime” is now displayed on America’s largest billboard, a 252-foot long sign along the Massachusetts Turnpike next to Fenway Park. This billboard is being used to spread the message that most US states still allow gun purchases without criminal background checks. This contributes greatly to gun trafficking and crime in Massachusetts. This new message will be seen by more than 250,000 people every day.

The problem with that billboard is that gun dealers are required, by federal law, to call the FBI and to check that a gun purchaser isn’t a felon, a fugitive, etc.So, while I don’t dispute the billboard’s message, I have to wonder what the point is.

The banner is incorrect. All people purchasing firearms from a Federal Firearms License holder (a FFL is a requirement for one to engage in the business of selling firearms) must, under federal law, undergo an FBI background check.Person-to-person private party transfers are generally not required to undergo background checks with the exception of California, Massachusetts, and a few other states, which do require them.
Statistics from a variety of sources, including law-enforcement, show no correlation between background checks and crime. Criminals are able to acquire their weapons illegally without any trouble, and are not affected by such laws.

The new billboard is great, but I really loved the old one, it was one of the first things I remember seeing when I moved up here, and made me proud of where I live.

Wow, that billboard is a total lie.All gun purchases in the United States, in EVERY state, require a NICS check. Some states have mechanisms in place which allow a bypass of that check if — and only if — there is already a standing finding of a clean background that is more thorough than a NICS check, such as a concealed carry permit.
That gun purchases are allowed without background permits is a total lie.
