At 11:30pm on Thursday February 9th, Boston Police Detectives conducted a licensed premise inspection of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity house at 526 Beacon Street.The attention of the detectives was drawn to that location due to a large crowd gathered outside waiting to be admitted. Several young people were observed drinking from cans of beer and bottles of champagne inside the house. A total of approximately 250 guests were inside the house drinking and many more were on a guest list yet to be admitted.
Detectives spoke with several underage partygoers and observed piles of trash blocking stairways and emergency exits. A fire exit was found to be not functioning as well as fire exit lights not working. A required Inspectional Services Certificate and a Dormitory License were found to be expired and had been since April of last year. Also the house lacked a Fire Assembly permit required to occupy the residence.
Phillip Cassell, 20 and the President of the Fraternity was issued a Licensed Premise Violation for serving alcohol to minors, disorderly house, blocked fire exit, fire exit lights not working, fire exit opening inward, expired dormitory license, expired ISD certificate and no fire assembly permit. Cassell will be summonsed to Boston Municipal Court. All residents of the house had to be evacuated and relocated by MIT until such time as the proper licenses are issued or renewed.
