Yesterday afternoon around 4PM, and officer from District B-2 (Roxbury) was en route to work when while traveling on Malcolm X Blvd. he observed a male suspect looking into the windows of cars parked across from 75 Malcolm X Boulevard.
The officer, aware of a number of car breaks in the same area of late and having personally written some of these reports, continued to observe the suspect. The officer observed the suspect remove what appeared to be a screwdriver from his pocket, lean against a car and break the car’s window with the screwdriver. The officer then observed the suspect enter the vehicle from the passenger window leaving only his legs dangling from the window. Having observed this, the officer reversed directions in order to stop the suspect but was hampered by traffic. The officer at this time notified 911 Operations of his location and the nature of the incident. The officer, having revered directions then observed the suspect with an armload of items taken from the car. The suspect became aware of the officer after he reversed directions and immediately began running. The suspect dropped some of the items in his possession as he jumped over a fence and attempted to escape. Other officers responded to the area of the incident and successfully caught the suspect near the intersection of Lambert and Bartlett Avenues.
Officers followed the suspects escape route and were able to recover a number of the items that were taken from the car. The suspect, Andre Hopkins, 42 of Roxbury was arrested and charged with Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle, Malicious Destruction of Property, Larceny over $250 from a Motor Vehicle and Possession of Burglarious Tools after the screwdriver was found in his possession after he was placed under arrest.
