OUI Suspect Tries to Avoid Arrest by Asserting Grandfather’s War Heroics

Around 10:31PM on Monday, May 24, 2010, officers from District D-4 (South End) were on patrol in the Fenway Park area when they were flagged down and informed that there was a car accident on Yawkey Way.

Officers responded to Yawkey way and there spoke to the victim operator of the car that was struck. The victim reported that she was while she was driving by a car that was pulling out of a parking space.  Officers then walked over to the other car to speak to her about the accident. On approaching the car, officers asked the operator if she was ok and she responded incoherently. Officers leaned closer to the window to gain ask the question and were struck by the smell of alcohol emanating from the operator. Officers then observed the operator’s eyes to be glassy and bloodshot. Based on those observations, officers made a preliminary determination that the suspect was driving under the influence of alcohol.

To further bolster their beliefs, officers asked the operator to exit the car in order to have her perform some sobriety tests. The suspect operator stumbled as she got out of the car and was unsteady on her feet. Officers then attempted to explain to the suspect how the sobriety tests should be performed but she ignored their instructions and exclaimed, “My grandfather Monahan dropped the (expletive) bomb on Iwo Jima!” Officers continued to try to explain the tests to the suspect but she again exclaimed, “Grandfather (expletive) bombed Iwo Jima!”

The suspect then attempted to perform the tests but failed them, not even successfully making it halfway through the tests. The suspect, during the tests, sated “I just want to go home.” The suspect, Carolyn Weiss, 34 of Beverly was arrested and charged with OUI-Alcohol. At the booking desk, the suspect started crying and continuously repeated her claim that her grandfather was a war hero.
