Dresses Still Available & Donations Still Being Accepted

On Friday, May 7, 2010, the 2^nd Annual Prom Dress Drive, created and put together by Boston Police Sgt. Lisa Holmes and City of Boston Street Worker Kendall Bruce, set up shop at the Grove Hall Community Center at 51 Geneva Ave in Dorchester in order to make the dream of going to one’s Junior or Senior prom a reality. However, as we all know, before a young woman can attend a prom, she needs a dress to attend it in. Looking beautiful at one’s prom is every young woman’s dream, but the financial reality of the evening has made it increasingly more difficult for young people to purchase the necessary attire. To help offset the costs of what has become an expensive occasion, the Prom Dress Drive was created. Last year’s drive was a big success and this year was even better.  

Prior to the big day, close to 300 dresses were donated and collected. So, when the day of the Prom Dress Drive arrived, those in need of a dress had plenty to choose from. The doors of the community center opened at 2:00pm and closed at 6:00pm. In that time, close to forty young women, between the ages of 16 – 18, stopped by the Grove Hall Community Center, perused the wardrobe possibilities and, ultimately, discovered a dress to wear to their proms and, in some cases, their graduations.

Said Boston Police Sergeant Lisa Holmes, “This is one of those events you can’t do all by yourself. We put the word out, asked people to step up and plenty of people did. At the end of the day, this is about helping the kids. And, a lot of folks can feel good about doing just that.” 

In addition to the dresses, the Prom Dress Drive also provided shoes, jewelry, make-up, purses and other accessories for the young women. For those still looking to make a donation or collect a dress, this year’s Prom Dress Drive will be having a 2^nd day. Day Two of this year’s drive will take place on Friday, May 21, 2010, at the Grove Hall Community Center from 2:00pm to 6:00pm from All donations should be cleaned and in good condition.
