Early today around 12:35AM, officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) responded to the area of 69 Jacob Street for a call for shots fired.

En route to the call, officers observed a group in the area of 60 Winston Road which is in close proximity to the location of the shots fired call. Officers stopped their cruiser to investigate this group. As officers neared this group, they observed several members of the group make their way to a parked car while one member away from the group and started running up Winston Road. Officers separated with one officer going toward the car, while the other officer pursued the fleeing male. The officer, that had approached the car, abandoned the investigation of the car once he observed the ongoing pursuit by his partner. Both officers pursued the suspect and as they did so heard the distinct sound of a metallic object striking the ground but failed to see the object that struck the ground. Officers continued their pursuit of the suspect and eventually caught and detained him in the back yard of a house at 42 Winston Road.

As officers had the suspect detained, officers were advised by an anonymous call to the 911 Operations Center that the suspect had “tossed the gun in the front yard of a gray house two doors from #50 Winston Road, “ the same area where the officers had heard the sound of metal striking the ground. Officers responded to that area and there found a loaded semi-automatic firearm. A thermal imager responded to the scene and detected a distinct thermal image of the firearm.

The suspect, Marcus Hurt, 24, of Jamaica Plain was arrested and charged with Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.

Part II: Gun Recovered from Fleeing Car

A short while after the above arrest around 12:52AM, the car that had been initially approached by the officers was observed traveling down Woodrow Ave. and Irma Street. The vehicle came to a stop in front of 27 Irma Street and as it did so, officers pulled up behind the car to further investigate. The passengers immediately attempted to exit the car but were ordered to remain in the car.

Officers then approached the car and had the occupants exit the car. The rear passenger upon being asked to exit the car stated to officers, “I got something in my pocket.” A pat frisk was conducted on the passenger at which time officers felt the distinct outline of a firearm. A loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun was then removed from the suspect’s right front pocket.

A ballistic sniffing dog was requested to the scene and upon responding indicated to the rear passenger side where the suspect had been seated. The suspect, Austin L. Dillon, 23, of Boston was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm and Possession of a Firearm with an Altered Serial Number.
