Boston Police Detective Mary McInness was awarded the second annual Humanitarian of the Year award on March

6^th, at the Emerald Society’s Annual Banquet.  Detective McInness is a 27-year veteran of the BPD, and is a mainstay in the Bureau of Field Services (BFS), Office of the Chief, having worked for six different Superintendents.

Nominated and selected for this award by the Emerald Society’s Board of Directors, Mary is a true unsung hero.  A dedicated public servant who spends a significant portion of her free time doing good for others, Mary McInness is a perfect recipient for this award.  One of her duties in BFS is dealing with Department employees who have lost family members.  In this role her friendly and empathetic nature provide much needed support for those in grief.  She also coordinates the BPD’s Honor Guard, Gaelic Column, and provides numerous vital administrative functions for the Bureau.

In addition to her career in law enforcement, over the years she has been involved in countless charity fundraisers, and can always be counted on to help out.  Always smiling, never turning down a request for assistance, she has a sterling reputation throughout the Department and the community.  As a board member of Cops for Kids with Cancer, Mary is dedicated to supporting children battling cancer and their families who often struggle under the weight of this fight.  For more information, visit www.copsforkidswithcancer.org
