BOSTON POLICE CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE INCIDENT OF OPEN AND GROSS LEWDNESS IN THE NORTH ENDInvestigators Release Sketch of Suspect
Today Boston Police are releasing the sketch of a suspect responsible for an incident of open and gross lewdness in the North End. Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance in this matter. Detectives urge community members to come forward with any information regarding this incident. Boston Police continue to increase patrols to the area and have provided safety tips below reminding residents to increase vigilance and always be aware of surroundings.
At about 2:22 pm, on Saturday, August 15, 2009, officers from Area A-1 (Downtown) responded to a radio call to take a report about a male exposing himself earlier in the morning. On arrival, officers met with and spoke to the victim who stated that she was walking in the area of Unity Street and Unity Court, at approximately 3:15am, on Saturday, August 15, 2009, when a Hispanic male approached her and attempted to engage her in conversation. The victim says when she turned to respond to the suspect, the suspect exposed himself. The victim says she pushed the suspect and fled to her home.
The victim describes the suspect as a Hispanic male, approximately 5’6” to 5’8” in height, between 30-35 years in age, weighing approximately 160lbs, with bushy eyebrows, wearing a tan t-shirt and blue jeans.
The Boston Police Department is actively investigating the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident. Anyone with information is strongly urged to call either the Boston Police Sexual Assault Unit at (617) 343-4400 or Area A-1 detectives at (617) 343-4248.

TIPS FOR ENSURING YOUR PERSONAL SAFETY
• If you are in fear or feel in danger dial 911 immediately.
• Avoid walking or travelling alone late at night. Walk with friends and people you know.
• Consume alcohol responsibly and stay in the company of friends.
• Always be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. When parking, walking or returning to your car, remain in well-lit and populated areas.
• Wear sneakers or shoes that allow for added mobility.
• Be watchful and aware. Keep your head up. Don’t become distracted by the use of cell phones or headphones.
• Keep a whistle within reach. If you feel threatened, use it to signal residents that you need assistance. Yelling “Fire!” “Help!” and/or “Rape!” are other ways of drawing attention and alerting people that you need help.
• Hold your car keys in your hand to use as a weapon against an attacker.
• Carry a cell phone.
• Call ahead to your destination to alert them that you’re on your way. Make sure that you’re expected at a certain time, so people will know to look for you in the event you fail to arrive at the designated time.
