DAILY INCIDENTS FOR SUNDAY, JUNE 7, 2009

DOWNTOWN ALTERCATION SENDS ONE TO THE HOSPITAL, TWO TO JAILAt about 11:41pm, on Saturday, June 6, 2009, officers from Area A-1 (Downtown) responded to a radio call for a fight in the area of 225 State Street. On arrival, officers spoke to the witness who stated that, during an altercation between his friends and another group, he observed a black male, wearing a black and white polo shirt, break a bottle over one of his friend’s heads. Moreover, officers spoke to a victim who had been stabbed during the altercation. According to that victim, a black male, wearing a red and white shirt, stabbed him. That victim was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. A search of the area enabled officers to locate two individuals matching the description of the suspects.
The suspect wanted in connection with the stabbing was brought back to the scene of the altercation. Upon seeing the suspect, the victim, who was being treated inside an ambulance, stated, “That’s him.” Officers arrested Michael Grillo, 28, of Buzzards Bay and charged him with Assault & Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon.
The suspect wanted in connection with the bottle incident was also returned to the scene of the altercation. Once on the scene, the victim looked at the suspect and positively identified him. Officers arrested Rafael Varela, 28, of Buzzards Bay and charged him with Assault & Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon.
According to the victims, they were helping a friend, who was on crutches, cross the street when the fight began. The victims say, as they were crossing the street, the suspects, who were in a car, began beeping their horn. Words were exchanged and, soon, the verbal altercation led to a physical one.
