Anonymous Tip Leads to Discovery of Two High-Powered Firearms Hidden Near Local School

On September 5, 2007 at approximately 9:45 pm officers received information, from a citizen who wished to remain anonymous, that firearms were being stored in an area around the Mattahunt School, 100 Hebron Street in Mattapan.Several officers including a K-9 unit were dispatched to the scene to canvas the area. An officer accompanied by his canine made a positive “hit” on a blue blanket laying on a woodpile in a wooded lot adjacent to 75 Hebron Street.
Officers observed a camouflage rifle case inside the blanket. The blanket and contents were secured by officers and transported to the local district station for processing. At the station, it was discovered that the blanket was concealing one 16-guage shotgun with ammunition and a 7.62mm rifle with ammunition. All evidence retrieved from the scene is currently being processed.
At this time, investigators believe that the individuals responsible for this are known to police and are not in any way associated with the school.
\”Public safety is our top priority and I commend the citizen tipster and the Police Department for their efforts in keeping our city safe,\” Mayor Menino said. \”I have full confidence in Commissioner Davis, the Boston Police Department and Boston Public Schools Police to provide a safe environment for our kids.\”
Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis stated, “I applaud the courage of the anonymous tipster who brought this information forward and played a key role in preventing what had the potential to be a tragic situation. It is crucial for all public safety officers to ensure a safe environment for our students. The Boston Police, working closely with the School Department and the School Police, will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure the utmost safety in and around our schools.”
The Boston Police have been conducting proactive sweeps around the perimeters of school buildings and will continue to do so.
