PROMOTIONS, NEW ASSIGNMENTS & ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGESI wish to commend the remarkable dedication demonstrated by the men and women of the Boston Police Department. Members of this department continue to do an excellent job keeping our community safe. Your tireless efforts are highly regarded by the community we serve.
It is my responsibility to guarantee a command and accountability structure that provides full support for our patrol force. Therefore, I am pleased today to announce the following promotions, new assignments and organizational changes.
This latest information will have a substantial impact in our efforts to decrease crime, reduce gun violence and protect the quality of life for city residents.
The department must be organized in a way that fully supports the Community Policing philosophy. I am confident that the following changes will help us achieve that goal.
The changes are reflected in Personnel Orders # 07- 279, # 07- 280 and are attached.
In addition to those organizational changes, I am also pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Anthony A. Braga as Chief Policy Advisor in the Office of the Police Commissioner. Many of you already know Dr. Braga as a trusted and highly qualified friend of the Boston Police Department. Dr. Braga is a Senior Research Associate and Lecturer in Public Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University and a Senior Research Associate at the Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California – Berkeley. Over the past twelve years, he has worked extensively with the Boston Police Department to develop and implement strategies to prevent gang violence, disrupt illegal gun markets, and address violent crime hot spots. He has also served as a consultant on these issues to many large police departments.
Dr. Braga will report directly to me and will act as an advisor on a broad range of Department issues affecting key programs, policies and procedures. He will also assist in evaluating, coordinating, planning and facilitating programs and strategies designed to effectively prevent crime, and improve the quality of life in the City.
I am confident that these changes and reassignments underscore the department’s commitment to address the needs of our community.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate those selected for promotion and those department members accepting the new challenges that their new assignments will bring them.
