Beginning the week of February 19, 2007, the Boston Police Department will kick-off an aggressive recruiting campaign that will highlight policing in Boston as an exciting, fulfilling, life-changing, rewarding career focused on protecting and serving our community. The department is seeking to achieve recruiting goals by executing a comprehensive, first-of-its-kind recruiting effort that will effectively target potential candidates from a multi-cultural applicant pool. The secondary goal of this campaign is to create an opportunity to reinforce the core values of the Boston Police Department to our constituency base and the community-at-large. “Many Jobs, One Career, Boston’s Future…Join the BPD” underscores the city’s commitment to creating a department that is community-minded and culturally representative.
“Many, Jobs, One Career, Boston’s Future…Join the BPD” was created based on the following objectives: attract a skillful and diversified applicant base interested in an honorable profession dedicated to public safety, create awareness of the state exam on May 19, 2007, define policing in Boston and the many benefits to joining the BPD and highlight the values of the BPD centered in integrity, pride, respect, courage and community.
The Boston Police recruiting effort will comprise of an aggressive communications program consisting of advertising, marketing and public relations initiatives developed to build immediate local awareness of the May 19th civil service exam.
The recruiting campaign consists primarily of eleven BPD images, all of which feature current members of the department. The BPD is proud to present this select group of officers who embody the spirit of community policing, exemplify the values of the department and symbolize the vibrant diversity that policing requires to effectively serve our city. Many of the advertisements will include in their own words, their personal inspiration for choosing a career in law enforcement. The images also represent the myriad of exciting assignments and positions available to individuals within the department. As the slogan says “Many Jobs, One Career, Boston’s Future…” the images represent a portion of the many opportunities the department has to offer ranging from but not limited to the Mountain Bike Unit, 911 Operations, the Motorcycle Unit, the Family Justice Center, the K-9 Unit, the Crime Scene Unit, Youth Service Officer, and Patrol Officer.
The advertising strategy will include print and online advertisements in major daily newspapers, local community newspapers and local print outlets serving ethnic populations. Advertisements will also include citywide placement of billboards and bus shelters.
Marketing efforts consist of a dedicated web site http://www.JointheBPD.com, brochures, and a toll free hotline 1-888-333-2353. Recruitment posters will be strategically placed citywide at community centers, universities, colleges and fitness facilities. In addition, there will be several direct mail components.
As part of ongoing public relations initiatives, the Boston Police Recruitment Unit will assign ‘Recruit Ambassadors’ to participate in upcoming Job Fairs, attend community meetings and maintain outreach to community members offering information and helpful tips.
The Boston Police currently has a class in the Academy consisting of 80 recruits. The next Academy classes are scheduled for June 2007 and additional classes will be scheduled for 2008. The Boston Police is currently comprised of 2,160 officers.
Candidates must meet the following criteria: be at least 21 years of age as of April, 23, 2007; be younger than 32 as of May 19, 2007, be a U.S. citizen, be able to pass a medial and physical examination prior to appointment and have a high school diploma or MA approved equivalent.
