Suspicious Object Found on George Street in Roxbury

On Wednesday, August 30, 2006 around 7:06 am, officers from District B-2 responded to a radio call for a suspicious object found at 71 George Street under a trash barrel on a sidewalk. Upon arrival, the officers sought the assistance of the Boston Police Bomb Unit. The Bomb Unit determined that the object appeared to be the type hand grenade used in military training. Taking the necessary precautions, explosives specialists removed the object from the area. At a safe location, Bomb Squad personnel utilized a standard “render safe procedure” with modified explosives to deactivate any potential threat. After this process was completed, it was determined that the object was a possible improvised, working explosive device. At this time, sections of George Street stretching from Hampden Street to Magazine Street are closed and traffic is being diverted. Boston Police officers accompanied by ATF agents are conducting a sweep of the area.
The Boston Police Department takes this opportunity to remind individuals, who come across a suspicious device or package to NOT attempt to touch or handle the object. Residents are reminded to immediately seek assistance by dialing 911.
