BPD Programs Recognized at Public Safety Awards

Last Thursday two Boston Police Department programs received the “Meritorious Award for Excellence in Public Safety” given by the Executive Office of Public Safety, following a competitive application process. The Boston Regional Intelligence Center, (BRIC) and District 3’s Operation Cloak and Dagger were recognized at a State House ceremony. In May of 2005, the BRIC was created through a merger of the Intelligence Unit and the Office of Research and Evaluation and assumed the responsibility for citywide crime and intelligence analysis. The BRIC provides analytical services in support of the Department’s priorities, including crime prevention and response, firearm activity, drugs and domestic preparedness. BRIC products are designed to provide the Department and partners with a data-driven decision making capability. BRIC data is reviewed daily and assists in tracking crime patterns as well as making projections of emerging crime trends.
Operation Cloak and Dagger was a District 3 initiative utilizing uniformed officers in plain-clothes patrols targeting violent crime. This approach was developed through a combination of youth surveys and situational crime prevention methodologies. In addition, the department used crime mapping technology and intelligence driven planning to target these patrols at gun violence in hotspot locations. In the area of operation, there were significant decreases in shooting homicides, and shooting incidents. Street crimes also saw significant drops in numbers.
A total of eight awards were given at the State House ceremony with two going to these Boston Police Department programs.
