This year marks the 23rd annual National Night Out, a nationwide celebration involving over 34 million people in more than 10,000 cities and towns across the United States. With the enthusiastic participation of communities citywide, the City of Boston in conjunction with the Boston Police Department anticipates this year will be the most successful National Night Out in Boston’s history.
Bostonians have always enjoyed a little friendly competition. During National Night Out from Friday, July 28, through Tuesday, August 1, 2006, cities and towns nationwide compete against one another for first place, which is based on the nation’s best celebration. Since 1992, Boston has always finished in the top ten. This year we want to finish Number One!
National Night Out organizers are confident that Boston’s winning community spirit will shine and this year’s event will accomplish our goal of empowering peace within our city. The national competition is judged on the number of National Night Out-related events, event size and creativity, and overall community camaraderie with police, city agencies, and community-based partners. Examples of events include: Block Parties, Porch Sits, and Street and Garden “Lights On” campaigns.

About National Night Out Boston 2006:
National Night Out Boston 2006 is the 23rd annual citywide celebration to empower peace throughout the City of Boston. This program cultivates and strengthens partnerships between the community, youth, police, city agencies and community-based organizations. National Night Out also acknowledges the remarkable contributions of Neighborhood Crime Watch groups, and seeks to increase participation in crime watch programs among local residents.
From Friday, July 28, through Tuesday, August 1, 2006, National Night Out will comprise of a variety of exciting citywide events which include: “Hands Across the River,” a celebration that brings together surrounding cities and towns, major events in every Police District, celebrations in City parks, and numerous block parties and \”lights on” events on streets and in community gardens around the City.
About the Neighborhood Crime Watch unit:
Our mission is to develop and maintain crime watch groups in every neighborhood in Boston and to provide these groups with the necessary skills and tools to act as organized, empowered groups that work with the police to deter crime and reduce fear. Additional we aid groups in networking with
Nearby or affiliated groups and provide guidance and support in developing community impact statements for the courts.
