Boston Police, Transit Police, Mayor Menino’s Office of Neighborhood Services, Elderly Affairs, Department of Neighborhood Development, Boston Fire, and the Public Works Department worked together again to address public safety concerns as well quality of life issues in Roxbury. The efforts of these agencies focused on the Upham’s Corner/ Dudley Square neighborhood over this weekend. Operation Home Safe commenced early Thursday and concluded early Sunday, focusing on crime and quality of life issues in the neighborhood.The Boston Police Department employed high visibility and saturation patrols throughout the neighborhood with many specialized units including the Tactical Bicycle Squad, Mounted Unit, Drug Units, Licensing Unit, and the Youth Violence Strike Force. All of these units combined to serve arrest warrants, execute search warrants and conduct high visibility patrol throughout that targeted neighborhood.
While the Boston Police targeted the residential and commercial areas of the neighborhood, the Transit Police conducted safety checks on M.B.T.A. buses traveling through the area over the weekend.
Personnel from the Elderly Affairs Unit knocked on 194 doors and made 53 contacts with elderly residents. Of the 53people contacted, 48 requested follow up visits from the Elderly Commission. Members of the Boston Fire Department assisted in the operation by providing residents with information on fire safety, education and prevention.
The Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services also conducted its annual Boston Shines Community Cleanup effort. Approximately 250 people volunteered and filled a total of 20, 30-yard dumpsters with trash and over 200 bags of garbage. The Department of Neighborhood Development also participated in this weekend operation by assisting residents with home-related services such as: home improvements, renovations, information of home purchases and financial literacy.
Operation Home Safe’s public safety function concluded early this morning, but the Mayors office of neighborhood services will coordinate city agencies in the neighborhood to address issues such as street cleaning, street light repair, and public works issues.
A total of 25 people were arrested during the operation, 75 Field Observation Reports were conducted, 127 Moving Violations Issued, 17 Parking violations, and 3 License Premise Inspections.
