On Saturday evening 4/15/06 at 6:15pm, officers in East Boston responded to 38 Condor Street for an unconscious female. On arrival they were informed that a female victim of Domestic Violence was inside. Velveena Baskin, 38, was taken from the scene to Mass General Hospital with serious injuries. The victim’s husband, 46-year-old Whitney Baskin, who witnesses said assaulted the victim, fled in a white Ford Escape prior to police arrival. A description of the suspect and the car were broadcast over police radios.At 6:50am on Sunday morning 4/16/06, officers were called to Condor and Meridian Streets for a car accident. According to a witness, a white Ford Escape just smashed into several parked cars and was now attempting to leave the area. As officers approached, they observed the suspect vehicle strike a fence while traveling in reverse. The car was stopped and the operator, Whitney Baskin was arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol. He was also wanted for the assault and battery on his wife the evening before.
On Sunday evening the victim, Velveena Baskin, died as a result of the injuries she sustained during the assault. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death. Whitney Baskin, who remains in police custody, will be arraigned tomorrow in East Boston District Court and it is expected that his charges will be upgraded to Murder.
