Subject Stop Leads to a Firearm Arrest in Harambe Park

About 6:15 PM, on Saturday, August 9, 2025, officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) arrested Zayondre Downing, 24, of Dorchester, on multiple firearm related offenses.

Officers were assigned to monitor the crowd at Harambee Park for a Basketball Tournament. A Sergeant was walking through the crowd when he observed two individuals walking towards him. One of the individuals alerted the other of the Sergeant’s presence, and the other party began to grab the right side of his waistband.

The two parties began walking quickly towards the Talbot Avenue Side of the park, and were able to evade officers. A description of the parties was broadcasted to all officers working the assigned event.

A short time later, an altercation ensued in between the basketball courts. As officers were separating the involved, the earlier two suspects were seen with both of them reaching towards their waistband. Once the suspects observed officers, they once again fled the area.

While officers continued to monitor the crowd, they observed the suspects for a third time. The suspects took note of the officers and began to walk away from the basketball tournament. Officers were able to quickly get in front and behind the suspects to box them in.

With the assistance of responding officers, both parties were stopped and a pat frisk was conducted. A firearm was recovered from a backpack, which was later determined to be a Beretta Pachmayr with one round in the chamber and eight rounds in a magazine capable of holding ten total rounds. The firearm also had an obliterated serial number.

Downing was placed under arrest and is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court for the following offenses:

–          Carrying a Firearm without a License

–          Unlawful Possession of Ammunition

–          Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License

–          Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number
