BPD Honors Black History Month: As the Boston Police Department continues to observe Black History Month, we pay homage to the legacy of Sergeant Dennis “DJ” Simmonds. Posthumously awarded the BPD’s esteemed Schroeder Brothers Medal, Sergeant Simmonds was part of the unit that courageously confronted the Boston Marathon Bombers in Watertown following the tragic events of April 15, 2013. His unit was among the first responders to engage with the suspects, and Sergeant Simmonds sustained a head injury caused by a tossed explosive device during the encounter. Despite this perilous situation, his unwavering bravery and dedication were evident. Tragically, Sergeant Simmonds passed away the following year, at just 28 years old, underscoring the profound impact of his service. A state-of-the-art playground at Harambee Park in Dorchester now bears his name, a fitting tribute to his courage and commitment to the community. As we honor Black History Month, we reflect on Sergeant Simmonds’ extraordinary contributions and the enduring legacy of his heroic deeds.
