BPD Remembers: The men and women of the Boston Police Department remembers the service and sacrifice of Patrolman John H. Manning who was killed in the line of Duty 88 years ago. Officer John Manning sustained severe injuries during the apprehension of a suspect on Sunday, February 6, 1938, injuries from which he later passed away.
Officer Manning served 16 years with the Boston Police Department, and was 39 years old at the time of his passing. He left behind a grieving wife and three children.
Officer Manning was buried at New Calvary Cemetery in Mattapan. His name is located on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C., Location Panel 3, East Line 9. His name is also forever engraved on the Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial at the State House in Boston.
