Traffic Stop by the Youth Violence Strike Force Leads to Recovery of a Firearm

On Monday, May 12, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force arrested Nikolas Howard, 19, of Dorchester, for firearm related charges.

At about 9:15 PM, officers were patrolling in the area of Seaver Street and Blue Hill Avenue. A vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the opposite lane of travel failed to stop for a red light. Officers immediately conducted a U-turn to affect a traffic stop. The vehicle finally came to a stop after a short distance.

The operator was advised of the reason for the stop, and officers requested his license and registration. A fanny pack was observed to be in the passenger seat, and the operator removed his license from the front compartment.

After further investigation, officers attempted to conduct a pat frisk of the fanny pack. The operator immediately began to pull the bag back, and a struggle ensued. The operator was removed from the vehicle, and a firearm was recovered from inside the fanny pack.

Detectives responded to process the firearm which was determined to be a Ghost Gun with a laser sight affixed to it. The firearm was loaded with ten rounds in the magazine.

Howard was placed under arrest and is expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court for the following offenses:

–          Unlawful Possession of a Firearm

–          Unlawful Possession of Ammunition

–          Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm
