Keen Observations Leads to Arrest of Serial Shoplifter in Hyde Park

At about 5:23 PM, on Thursday, February 13, 2025, officers assigned to District E-18 (Hyde Park) arrested Antoine Mendez, 37, of West Roxbury, for multiple shoplifting offenses.

Officers were conducting a walk and talk in the area of 1035 Truman Parkway due to a recent serial shoplifter. A BRIC flyer was disseminated depicting an individual believed to be involved in four prior incidents. Officers were aware that the suspect had used a bicycle and a wheeled shopping bag in the past.

While patrolling the area, officers observed two unattended bicycles at the entrance of the shopping plaza. Officers maintained surveillance of the bicycles and observed an individual matching the prior descriptions fleeing the area on a bicycle while pulling a suitcase-like bag with wheels.

Officers were able to position their cruiser in front of the suspect, and attempted to stop him. The suspect immediately dropped the wheeled bag and attempted to flee the area. The suspect slipped off the bicycle and continued to run. A foot pursuit ensued, and officers were able to stop the suspect.

As officers attempted to place the suspect into custody, he began to actively resist. The suspect refused to stop resisting, but was able to be placed into handcuffs. Officers were able to recover approximately $271.81 in stolen merchandise from the store.

Mendez was charged with Shoplifting and Resisting Arrest. Officers also determined that the suspect had two warrants for his arrest for Larceny from a Building, and Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. He is expected to be arraigned in West Roxbury District Court.
