Police Commissioner Michael A. Cox

Boston Police Department Concludes Black History Month Celebration: Honoring Commissioner Michael A. Cox

Culminating our celebration of Black History Month, the Boston Police Department proudly acknowledges Michael Cox, inaugurated as the 43rd Commissioner by Mayor Michelle Wu in August 2022, for his exemplary leadership. With 15 years of service on the Command Staff in various roles across the department, including the Bureau of Professional Development, Investigative Services, Operations Division, and Forensic Sciences, Commissioner Cox brings a wealth of experience to his role. A native of Roxbury and Dorchester, Cox commenced his journey with the Boston Police Department in 1989, later serving as Chief of the Ann Arbor Michigan Police Department for three years beginning in 2019.

Commissioner Cox’s dedication to education is evident through his academic achievements. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and Police Executive Research Forum, and holds an undergraduate degree in Business Management from Providence College, a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Curry College, and an MBA from Boston University Questrom School of Business.

Under his guidance, the department champions community policing, fostering partnerships, and cultivating trust with Boston’s residents. Despite record-low crime statistics, Cox underscores the importance of educating residents about the department’s initiatives and actively engaging them in shaping policing strategies tailored to their needs. This collaborative approach aims to create safer communities where residents feel secure and where safety measures are actively implemented.

As we conclude our commemoration of Black History Month, we honor Commissioner Cox for his significant contributions to the department and his commitment to serving the Boston community. His leadership exemplifies the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion that are central to our mission.
