Boston Police Department Continues Black History Month Celebration: Honoring William Gross, Trailblazer and First African American Police Commissioner

BPD Celebrates Black History Month: In commemoration of Black History Month, the Boston Police Department proudly recognizes William Gross, who made history as the 42nd Commissioner and the first African American to hold this esteemed position. Gross dedicated an impressive 37 years to the Boston Police Department, embarking on his journey as a police cadet in 1983 before advancing through the ranks with unwavering commitment. His illustrious career saw him ascend to the Command Staff in 2008 as a Deputy Superintendent, further rising to the positions of Superintendent and Superintendent-in-Chief. In August of 2018, he made history with his appointment as Commissioner, leaving an indelible mark on the department and the city. While Gross originally hailed from Maryland, Boston became his cherished home, where he received numerous accolades for his service and dedication to the residents of the city and the Boston Police Department.
