BPD Remembers: Today, February 6th, marks the solemn anniversary of Officer John H. Manning’s sacrifice while in the line of duty, 86 years ago.
Officer John Manning sustained severe injuries during the apprehension of a suspect on Sunday, February 6, 1938, injuries from which he later passed away.
At the time of his tragic demise, Officer John Manning was 39 years old, leaving behind a grieving wife and three children.
Having dedicated 16 years to the Boston Police Department, Officer Manning rests in peace at New Calvary Cemetery in Mattapan. His name is etched on the National Law Enforcement Memorial, Panel 3, East Line 9, as well as the Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Law Enforcement Memorial at the State House in Downtown Boston.
