Teamwork Lands Robbery Suspect in Jail : Officers Assisted by the Community Capture Crook

Yesterday morning around 11:11am, officers arrested suspect, Jamal Smith, 23 of Dorchester and charged him with Unarmed Robbery.

While patrolling the intersection of Washington and Winter Streets, officers observed an individual, later identified as a victim, running and yelling for someone to “STOP”. Officers approached the victim and learned that he was chasing after a black male wearing all black who had just robbed the Gold Mobile Store at 8 Winter St. of a gold chain.

The officers then observed the suspect running up Winter Street towards Tremont Street.  Officers pursued the suspect into the Boston Common and while doing so were aided by a community member who pointed in the direction of the suspect. The officers continued to pursue the suspect and after a brief foot pursuit caught the suspect with a long chain in his right hand inside the Common at Park and Tremont Streets. After catching the suspect, the suspect was positively identified by a witness and placed under arrest.

Officers then returned to the scene and spoke to witnesses and the victim. Officers learned that the suspect walked into the store and asked to see a gold chain for the purpose of buying it. The victim was asked for an ID which he showed and then handed a gold chain. The suspect then asked to try it on and was given permission. The suspect placed the chain around his neck, took it off and placed it on his neck again at which point he turned around and fled the store.

The suspect was consequently arrested and charged with the above offense.
