Yesterday in the early morning hours around 3:13AM, officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) arrested suspect, Curtis Preston, 21 of Cambridge and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Discharging a Firearm within 500’ of a Dwelling. Four counts of Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon, Malicious Destruction of Property over $250.00 and Tampering with the Identifying Number of a Firearm.
Officers were first alerted to the shooting incident when officers conducting a traffic stop in the area of Blue Hill Ave. and Woodville St. heard what sounded like 10-12 shots from a nearby area. Their suspicions were confirmed by Operations which had also received notification via ShotSpotter. Officers immediately headed in the direction of the shots to the intersection of Warren and Clifford Streets where they observed four individuals get in a car and quickly pull away down Dale Street.
Based on the fact that shots had just been fired and the manner in which the individuals had just gotten in the car and quickly pulled away, officers pulled up behind the car with lights and sirens in an attempt to further investigate by conducting a traffic stop. The car failed to stop for officers but rather just kept going with officers following closely. Officers remained behind the car and while following the car observed a black object drop out of the rear passenger side window followed by the sound of a metal object striking the ground. Officers immediately notified Operations of their observations and requested that a unit be sent to the location to verify their suspicions that a gun had been dropped from the car. An officer responded to the location and there secured the firearm.
After discarding the firearm, the car traveled a short distance and came to a stop in front of 16 Rockland Street. The driver, upon being stopped exclaimed, “Officer, my boy [has] been stabbed, I have to get to the hospital to see him.” The four occupants were secured and detained while information was gathered from officers at the scene where the shots were fired. While the suspects were detained, officers learned that there had been a party at 312 Warren Street where an individual had been stabbed to the face and ballistic evidence was collected near where the suspects’ car had been seen pulling away when officers observed them. Several victims and witnesses were located who either suffered damage from the shots fired or who provided evidence that lead to the suspects’ car being identified as having been involved in the shooting.
All occupants of the car were taken into custody pending further investigation and once information had been collected, it was determined that suspect Preston was responsible for the barrage of bullets that had been fired near the intersection of Warren and Dale Streets damaging several parked and passing cars.
