BATON WIELDING SUSPECT ARRESTED IN SOUTH BOSTON

At about 3:18am, on Sunday, March 6, 2011, officers from Area C-6 (South Boston) responded to a radio call for an altercation in the area of 700 E. 7th Street.  On arrival, officers spoke to three victims who stated that they had been attacked by an individual wielding an extendable baton. According to the victims, they had been involved in a verbal altercation with a group earlier in the night. However, a larger group, driving a green motor vehicle with a fin on the trunk, returned and a physical altercation ensued. During the altercation, one individual in particular produced an extendable baton and began attacking the victims. One of the three victims was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

In short time, officers observed a green motor vehicle with a fin on the trunk. Seeing that this vehicle matched the vehicle seen fleeing the area from the earlier incident, officers activated their emergency equipment (lights & sirens) and stopped the car. Officers noted that the operator of the car looked like the suspect from the earlier incident. As a result, officers instructed the operator to exit the car. While talking to the suspect, officers noted that the suspect had what appeared to be blood on his face, hands and arms. Officers also noted that the suspect appeared to be intoxicated given the fact that he smelled of alcohol, his eyes were red and glassy and his speech slurred. The suspect consented to and failed a field sobriety test.

The suspect was also brought back to the scene of the original altercation for identification purposes. Once there, several witnesses positively identified him.

Officers arrested Brendan Niedzwiecki, 19, of Boston and charged him with Assault & Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon and Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol.
