Around 11:29AM, officers from District A-1 (Downtown Boston) responded to the 125 Canal Street, The Sovereign Bank in Boston for a bank robbery.

On arrival, dispatched officers spoke with bank staff and a detail officer who had been working nearby and learned that the bank had just been robbed.  The teller described the suspect as a white male, with no facial hair, between 30 and 40 years of age, 5’9”, weighing about 175 lbs, wearing sunglasses, a red hooded sweatshirt with a yellow hood, blue pants, and white sneakers. According to the teller, the suspect approached her window and handed her a note which read, “Give me all $100, $50, $20 and $10. Hurry up and no dye packs.”  The suspect according to bank staff fled the bank in a Jeep with a given registration, and headed over the bridge toward Charlestown. 

Officers broadcast the suspect’s description along with his vehicle and his direction of flight over the police radio. Officers, based on the broadcast description, were able to locate the suspect’s car on West St. in Charlestown abandoned and running a short time after the robbery.  Officers queried the car and learned that it had been reported stolen out of Winthrop on 11/14/10.

An officer, on scene, shortly after looking at pictures of the suspect was able to identify him from past encounters. Other units responded to the Mishuwan Housing complex where they found the suspect walking around.  After getting confirmation that the suspect was indeed wanted for the bank robbery, he was placed under arrest.  After placing the suspect under arrest, officers were able to recover the glasses believed to have been worn by him during the bank robbery.

The suspect, Michael Fidler, 32 of Boston was arrested and charged with Unarmed Bank Robbery. He will be arraigned at Boston Municipal Court today, November 16, 2010.
