Proactive Operation Targets Known Violent Offenders
On Friday, July 2, 2010, members of the Boston Police Youth Violence Strike Force, Boston Police Homicide Unit, Boston Police Fugitive & Apprehension Team, officers from Area B-2 (Roxbury), Area B-3 (Mattapan), Area C-11 (Dorchester) and Area E-13 (Jamaica Plain), in collaboration with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Probation Department, Department of Youth Services and the Boston School Police initiated Operation BOOMERANG. The operation, a proactive warrant sweep, was conducted in communities recently impacted by gang violence. The mission of the operation is to disrupt violent activity by arresting individuals in those areas who are known for negatively affecting the quality of life in their respective communities.
The goal of Operation BOOMERANG is to send a clear message to individuals involved in gang-related activities. Individuals who are believed to be involved in gang activity were the primary targets of the sweep. By locating and arresting such individuals on outstanding warrants, the department also seeks to reduce gang violence and augment the level of intelligence necessary to prevent future gang-related hostilities.
Mayor Thomas Menino stated, “Today’s warrant sweep shows that as a community, we will not tolerate violent behavior in our city. Summer is a time for kids to relax and enjoy a positive break from their school schedule and activities. We are committed to providing an environment where children and all of our residents can enjoy the summer months in a safe and peaceful environment. I applaud the ongoing collaboration among law enforcement and local and state agencies to reduce crime and improve the quality of life for residents.”
Police Commissioner Ed Davis stated, “I commend the tireless efforts put forth by Boston Police officers, our fellow law enforcement agencies and our community partners who continue to send a united message to those who choose to participate in violent activity. Gang activity and the violence that accompanies it will not be tolerated in our neighborhoods. Commissioner Davis added, “As is evident by today’s cooperative effort, those responsible for such activities will be apprehended and held accountable.”
