2,000 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA LOCATED AND SEIZED IN COORDINATED LAW ENFORCEMENT EFFORT

On Wednesday, June 2, 2010, members of the Boston Police Area E Neighborhood Drug Control Unit, in collaboration with Massachusetts State Police and the FBI Drug Task Force, were on scene to execute an unrelated search warrant on Wilcock Street in Mattapan. While officers were in the process of executing another warrant, officers observed a resident in a 3^rd floor apartment attempting to flee the premise. As a result, officers approached the individual and inquired why he was running away from the location. In the course of the conversation, officers learned that the individual mistakenly assumed the police were in the area looking for him. When officers learned that the suspect lived on the 3^rd floor of the location, officers went to the 3^rd floor for the purposes of conducting a protective sweep.

Once on the 3^rd floor, officers noted and observed that the rear door of the apartment was open. Prior to entering the apartment, officers were able to detect what smelled like marijuana. Upon entering the location, officers observed and located a several large plastic trash bags. While standing next to the bags, officers were able to determine that the odor of marijuana was, in fact, emanating from the trash bags. Upon completing the sweep, officers were unable to locate any other people inside the apartment. The apartment was then frozen pending the issuance of a search warrant. Upon receipt of the warrant, officers entered the apartment and located forty bales of marijuana wrapped in black plastic. The amount is approximately 2,000 lbs. of marijuana with a street value of approximately 5 million dollars.

Police Commissioner Ed Davis stated, “This arrest should serve as a clear message to those who attempt to disrupt the safety of our neighborhoods. The Boston Police Department, in conjunction with our many law enforcement partners, will aggressively pursue individuals who compromise a community where hard-working and law-abiding people reside. It is simply unacceptable in this city and we will hold perpetrators accountable.”

Officers arrested Edgar Gonzalez, 40, of Boston and charged him with Trafficking Class D Substance (marijuana). When asked if he was aware of the large amount of marijuana in his apartment, the suspect stated he knew nothing about it.
