On May 14th the Human Resources Division of the Boston Police Department received the Patriotic Employer Award, for their efforts to support the military personnel from BPD who have been activated for service. The award is given by ESGR (Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve), an agency of the Department of Defense. This is the second time Human Resources has been honored over the last few years.
HR was nominated by Det. Ken Westhaver, a member of the BPD and Air National Guard, who has been activated in recent years. Det. Westhaver is one of many BPD employees who serve in the Guard or Reserve. In fact, there are 12 BPD employees currently serving active duty in the military, deployed to places such as Afghanistan and Iraq. Mimi Benoit and Dawn Simpson from HR make it easier for them to serve their countries without having to worry about the additional logistics and bureaucratic red tape involved with compensation and benefits. Mimi and Dawn coordinate with City Hall, the various branches of the military, the deployed employee and his/her family to ensure a smooth transition and provide ongoing support.
This support provides peace of mind to our employees that their families will be taken care of while they are deployed, and keeps them focused on their mission as well as their own safety. Congratulations to the Human Resources Division, and thank you to our men and women who serve in the Armed Forces – protecting our Country as they do our City.
