TRAFFIC ADVISORY – WALK FOR HUNGER – SUNDAY, MAY 2, 2010

Traffic and parking restrictions will be in place on many streets in Downtown Boston on Sunday, May 2, 2010 due to the annual Walk for Hunger.  In particular, traffic congestion is expected on the streets surrounding the Boston Common.  The Boston Transportation Department is encouraging participants to use the MBTA to come into the event on Sunday.

Charles Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6 AM to 11AM.  Message boards will be located at Charles Street South at Park Plaza advising motorists to detour left to Massachusetts Avenue, and at the intersection of Boylston and Arlington Streets to advise drivers to use Arlington Street as an alternative.  In addition, Commonwealth Avenue will be closed from 6 AM to Noon and a message board will be placed on Commonwealth Avenue between Amory Street and the BU Bridge advising drivers to detour right to Storrow Drive.  Streets along the route will be closed to traffic as the estimated 40,000 participants walk to raise funds for Project Bread.

 The route is as follows:

  • Formation on the Boston Common at Charles and Beacon Streets, left onto
  • Beacon Street, left onto
  • Arlington Street, right onto
  • Commonwealth Avenue, under
  • Massachusetts Avenue, through
  • Kenmore Square, continuing onto
  • Beacon Street, into Brookline and re-entering Boston on
  • Beacon Street at Ary Road, and continuing on
  • Beacon Street into Newton.

Participants will walk on sidewalks for the return trip to the Boston Common.  The route is Massachusetts Avenue, right on Commonwealth Avenue to the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, across Arlington Street, through the Public Garden, across Charles Street, returning to the Boston Common.

No Stopping restrictions will be implemented on the following streets on Saturday to prepare for the event

  • Beacon Street, south side (Boston Common side), from Charles Street to opposite Walnut Street
  • Charles Street, both sides, from Boylston Street to Beacon Street

No Stopping restrictions will be implemented on the following streets on Sunday to accommodate the event.

DOWNTOWN BOSTON

  • Arlington Street, east side (Public Garden side), from Beacon Street to Commonwealth Avenue
  • Beacon Street, both sides, from Charles Street to Arlington Street
  • Beacon Street, north side (outbound side), from Commonwealth Avenue to Park Drive (Audubon Circle)
  • Beacon Street, south side (Boston Common side), from Charles Street to opposite West Street (Saturday and Sunday)
  • Charles Street, both sides, from Boylston Street to Beacon Street
  • Tremont Street, west side (Boston Common side), from Park Street to Boylston Street

CLEVELAND CIRCLE

  • Beacon Street, west side (Reservoir side) from Chestnut Hill Avenue westerly until meeting the existing Tow Zone No Stopping Anytime regulations
  • Cassidy Playground Parking Area, both sides, parking area at Cassidy Playground between Beacon Street and Chestnut Hill Avenue, on all parking areas
