DAILY INCIDENTS FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2009

Man Arrested For Failing to Register as a Sex Offender in Public ParkOn Tuesday, September 15, 2009, at approximately 10:25am, Boston Police Officers assigned out of Area D-4 (South End), were patrolling in the area of Peter’s Park when they their attention was drawn to two grown men in the park. This immediate location has been a recent area of concern where substantial police resources have been utilized.
Officers exited their cruisers and approached the two subjects on foot in order to speak with them. While doing so, one of the subjects abruptly turned away from the officers and attempted to leave the park. Officers called to the subject and asked him to stop. Officers then engaged the subject in conversation and learned he failed to register as a sex offender. This information was confirmed and the suspect was placed into custody.
Officers arrested Walter Covington, 50, of 201 Cottage Park Road, Winthrop on the charges of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.
Robbery Victim Spots Robber Two Days After Incident
On Sunday, September 13, 2009, a Boston Police Officer assigned to Area E-18 (West Roxbury), spoke with an individual who reported being robbed by a black male in the area of Winthrop Street. The victim informed the officer that he was walking behind the library when he was approached by the suspect who asked for a light. The victim reached into his pocket and provided a lighter. At this time, the suspect brandished a large folding knife in a threatening manner and the victim’s belongings. The victim turned over an amount of United States currency and a bottle of prescription medication. The suspect then fled the area and ran down Central Avenue. The officer broadcast a description of the suspect to other BPD officers who searched the area to no avail.
Two days later, on September 15, 2009, the above-mentioned victim was in the area of Hyde Park Avenue and River Street when he observed the person who robbed him two days prior.
Officers responded and received a detailed description of the suspect and requested several other units to search the area for him. Shortly thereafter, a black male subject fitting the description was observed in a yard on Summer Street. The subject was detained and the victim was transported to his location in order to conduct identification. The suspect was identified and placed into custody.
Officers arrested Mario Gomes, 52, of 95 Davidson Street, Hyde Park, on the charges of Armed Robbery.
