Purse Snatcher Targets Elderly Woman…Arrested After Brief Foot Chase

On Thursday, August 21, 2009, at approximately 5:40pm, officers assigned to Area E-18 (West Roxbury), responded to the Shaw’s Supermarket located at 1377 Hyde Park Avenue, for a report of a robbery in progress.Officers arrived on-scene and located an Eighty-Seven-year-old (87) female victim that stated she had just had her purse stolen by a black male with braided hair, wearing red pants and a Red Sox T-shirt.
She went on to inform officers that she was exiting the store with her groceries when the above-described suspect approached her and asked her for money and cigarettes. The victim then opened her purse and retrieved a cigarette. While her purse was open, the suspect ripped it from her hands and ran away. Several independent witnesses informed officers of the suspect’s route of travel.
Officers immediately broadcast the suspect’s description and direction of flight. Shortly thereafter, officers observed an individual running in the area of Gordon Avenue. Officers approached the suspect and he continued to flee. After a brief chase, officers were able to apprehend him.
The suspect was positively identified and placed into custody. While handcuffing him, a small wallet fell to the ground from under his t-shirt. The wallet was later identified as the victims. Officers were able to recover the victim’s purse in other belongings that were discarded in the general area. All recovered belongings and money were returned to the victim. The suspect stated he stole “the white woman’s money” because he has been treated poorly by white people and the government for a long time.
Officers arrested Carmello Meus, 120 Gordon Avenue, Hyde Park, 25, on the charges of Unarmed Robbery.
