Officers’ Training Leads to Gun ArrestAround 10:55pm yesterday, officers from the Youth Violence Strike Force (Gang Unit) were strategically placed in different sections to monitor activity in the Warren Gardens Housing complex.
While engaged in this activity, officers’ attention was drawn to a group of young men loitering and walking back and forth behind several the apartments located on St. Richard and Fenno Streets. Officers continued to monitor this group and noticed that one individual would walk behind the apartments and furtively look back in the direction of St. Richard Street. Based on those observations, officers walked to the location where this individual had been observed to try to further determine the cause of his odd behavior.
Officers approached the subject and he initiated conversation with officers as they approached. While talking to the suspect, officers made note of the fact that the suspect’s hooded sweatshirt’s front pocket was heavily weighted down and that the lowest point of the hooded sweatshirt’s pocket appeared to be in the shape of a barrel of a gun. Based on training and experience and specifically a training from the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Bureau about the “Characteristics of an Armed Gunman” officers formed the opinion that the suspect was armed.
Having formed the opinion that the suspect was armed, officers approached him to confirm their belief when the suspect fled on foot. A lengthy foot chase ensued during which the suspect jumped over several fences. After some time, the suspect was stopped and attempted to mislead officers in a different direction as to the path he had taken during the pursuit. Officers, however, had observed the suspect’s path and followed tracks left in the snow and behind a house located the gun that the suspect had possessed.
The suspect, John Carr, 18, of Roxbury was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Class D for marijuana found on his person and Trespassing.
Reckless Driver Arrested for Driving to Endanger
Last night around 11:17pm, officers from District B-2 (Dorchester and Roxbury) arrested suspect, Rande Toney-Evans, 17, of Dorchester and charged her with Operating without Being Licensed, Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Personal Injury, Reckless Operation, Failure to Stop for Police, Speeding, Crossing Double Yellow Line, and Failure to Stop for a Red Light.
Officers were first alerted to the suspect while coming back from another incident. Officers pulled up behind the suspect’s car in traffic en route to District B-2 when she suddenly pulled away at a high rate of speed on Warren St. towards Dudley Street. As the suspect approached Dudley St., she crossed the double yellow lines to pass a vehicle and continued through the intersection despite the red light. As the suspect continued through the intersection, she lost control of her car and crashed into another motor vehicle in traffic. The suspect then attempted to flee the scene and took off, all the while “fishtailing” down Dudley Street. As the suspect’s car “fishtailed” down Dudley St. she lost control and crashed into a parked car.
The suspect was then placed under arrest and transported to the district station. The owner of the car was cited for Allowing an Improper Person to Operate due to the fact that the suspect was unlicensed.
Copper Thief Caught Wheeling Evidence from the Scene
At approximately 12:50am this morning, officers from District D-4 (South End) responded to a radio call for a larceny in progress in the rear of 195 Marlborough Street.
En route, officers were provided with a description of the suspect and on arrival observed an individual matching the suspect description pushing a shopping cart filled with pieces of copper. Officers located a witness who told them that he has had to replace his copper downspouts at last three times in the past due to theft. The witness stated that he was awakened by noise in the alley and observed the suspect walking in the alley, heard some noise in the alley and then observed him walking out with a large piece of copper downspout in his hand and placing it in his cart.
Officers surveyed the suspect’s shopping cart and observed several copper O-rings used to secure the downspouts in the suspect’s shopping cart. Officers conducted a search of the area and located several missing downspouts.
The suspect, David Perez, 45, of Roxbury was arrested and charged Larceny Over $250.00.
