“In the Air” Basketball Camp Takes Center Court at Boston UniversityThe Boston Police Department’s ‘Kids At Risk’ scholarship program, LiveNation/Tea Party Concerts and BU Basketball Coach Dennis Wolf teamed up to provide 30 Boston youth with the opportunity to spend one week learning the principles of teamwork and good sportsmanship. Boys and girls in grades 4-8 participated in this year’s ‘In The Air” Basketball Camp at Boston University.
Youth from surrounding communities, including South Boston, the South End, Roxbury, Hyde Park and Dorchester, enjoyed the chance to interact with professional athletic staff, college coaches, and college players to receive a first-hand look at college life, while making new friends and building skills on and off the court.
The Boston Police Department and particularly Superintendent Paul Joyce would like to extend a special thanks to Coach Dennis Wolf, who has partnered with the Boston Police ‘Kids at Risk’ initiative for the last ten years. Coach Wolf has continually demonstrated his dedication to supporting Mayor Menino’s commitment to providing positive alternative to kids during the summer months.
The ‘Kids At Risk’ program is a fundraising initiative, supported wholly by outside donations, primarily through the cooperation of Boston area radio stations. In partnership with the Don Law Company, the Boston Police Department has been able to raise approximately $500,000 since 1994. These donations came as a result of the media campaign designed by the Don Law Company, which enlisted the cooperation of local radio stations to auction off concert tickets, with the proceeds going directly to the Boston Police Foundation, ‘Kids At Risk’ account. The funds raised from this effort went directly to inner city youth through scholarships to summer camps, after school programs and memberships to the local YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. This fundraising effort enabled over 5,000 youth to participate in overnight camps, summer programs, join youth centers and attend hockey, basketball and football camps.
