At approximately 12:03am, officers on patrol in the area of 800 Bennington Street, East Boston, passed a male attempting to hide his face with his hood, then turn and walk in the opposite direction. When officers spoke to the suspect, he ran, discarding objects from his waist area onto Bennington Street. The suspect then ran to 740 Bennington Street, attempting to kick in the door of a residence. As an officer began to detain the suspect, he was kicked in the upper leg. A second officer assisted in apprehending the suspect, who continued to resist arrest. While handcuffing the suspect, a second suspect suddenly appeared and kicked one of the arresting officers in the face, knocking him unconscious.When the injured officer regained consciousness, he continued to perform his duty, attempting to detain the second suspect who assaulted him. As other officers arrived, two more suspects attempted to prevent officers from arresting the second suspect by pushing and striking officers.
The injured officer was taken to the hospital for treatment of a facial fracture to his eye socket, broken teeth and shoulder and ankle injuries.
Jose Lemus, 29, of East Boston was arrested for Assault & Battery on a Police Officer. Matthew Johnson, 19, of East Boston was arrested for Assault & Battery on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest and Possession of Class B, C & D Drugs with Intent to Distribute. A 16 year-old juvenile was arrested for Delinquent to Wit: Assault & Battery on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest and Disorderly Person.
