Why is the Lenox St/Shawmut Ave intersection where the shooting took place continuously referred to as the “South End?” The western border of the real South End is Mass Ave — the intersection of the shooting is at least 3 blocks west of Mass Ave. The city of Boston defines the border that way. Most of the media reports on the shooting described it as happening in the South End. I spoke with multiple members of the media who claimed that they KNEW it was not the South End, but that the Boston Police required that they report it erroneously as the South End and not Roxbury as it should have been described.
I don’t know if the police’s twisting of the shooting’s jurisdiction is to work the homicide numbers away from Roxbury, but it is equivalent to the cooking of the books at Enron.

I think the confusion lies in that the shooting took place within the South End *patrol district*.Lenox Street is within the South End police patrol district which runs out to Melnea Cass Boulevard. South End sector cars would have been the ones to respond and record the incident, hence the designation.
These patrol districts do not necessarily coincide with the various geographical boundaries between neighborhoods that may or may not be agreed upon. They’re simply a way to organize police patrols.

BRIC,I do agree with you that the incident happened within the “South End precinct’s sector”, but that shouldn’t result in the media reporting the crime as happening in the South End. If the Back Bay’s precinct happened to cover Hyde Park, would a Hyde Park crime be reported as happening in the Back Bay?
There is something beyond precincts that is happening if the police are advising the media NOT to refer to the location as “Roxbury,” but rather as “South End”
