Serial Shoplifter Arrested in Downtown Boston

At about 5:16 PM, on Friday, May 24, 2024, officers assigned to District A-1 (Downtown) arrested Roberto Alves, 49, of Boston, on shoplifting charges.

Officers responded to the area of 7 Faneuil Hall Marketplace for a report of a larceny in progress. Boston Police Operations provided officers with a description of the suspect who was seen wearing a black ski mask.

Officers were aware that the Sunglass Hut had been victim to approximately nine recent shopliftings. The BRIC also disseminated a flyer with a picture with the alleged suspect.

Officers began to canvass the area and observed the suspect walking inside the Boston Public Market. Officers were able to stop the suspect, and determined that he had a warrant for his arrest. Officers searched the suspect and recovered multiple sunglasses with the security tags still attached. The suspect was unable to produce a receipt for the stolen sunglasses which were determined to be valued at approximately $2,009.

Alves was placed under arrest and charged with shoplifting by asportation. He was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.
