National Peace Officers Memorial Day is celebrated on May 15th, and National Police Week is honored during the week in which that date falls.
As part of honoring Law Enforcement during this important time, members of the Command Staff, members of our Peer Support Unit and several other officers joined the Retired Boston Police Officers Association as they placed newly created BPD grave markers at Evergreen Cemetery in Boston.
As part of the ceremony event, the granddaughter of Sergeant Horatio Homer placed a marker on his grave. Sergeant Homer was a trailblazer in the Boston Police Department. He holds the distinction of being the first African American to join the force and subsequently to earn the rank of Sergeant with BPD.
Along with the Retirees Association, the Charbonnier Foundation and the Brotherhood for the Fallen will be placing the markers on all graves of BPD officers who died in the line of duty or who have died by suicide. The Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association is also supporting these efforts.
The grave markers are available via the Retired Boston Police Officers Association.
