BPD Remembers The Service And Sacrifice Of Officer George J. Hanley Who Died On This Day 90 Years Ago

BPD Remembers: The men and women of the Boston Police Department remember the service and sacrifice of Officer George J. Hanley who died 90 years ago today on March 20, 1934. Officer Hanley passed away due to complications from injuries he sustained several years prior when he was struck by a police vehicle while on duty.

Officer Hanley was 46 years old at the time of his death and had served the department for 8 years. Officer Hanley was laid to rest at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Mattapan. He was survived by his wife and two daughters. 

His name is forever imprinted on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. on Panel 25, West Line 5. His name can also be seen on the BPD’s Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Massachusetts State Law Enforcement Memorial located on the lawn of the Massachusetts State House in Boston.
