Boston Police Department Issues Public Safety Warning on Drink Spiking Ahead of Halloween Celebrations

The Boston Police Department is issuing a public safety advisory urging residents, students, and visitors to exercise heightened vigilance against drink spiking and related hazards during the upcoming Halloween weekend.

With large crowds expected across local nightlife venues, house gatherings, and seasonal events, police are highlighting the severe dangers associated with illicit substances such as Rohypnol, GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate), and Ketamine. Because these drugs are typically colorless, odorless, and virtually tasteless, they can be introduced into beverages without detection, causing sudden disorientation, impaired judgment, loss of consciousness, or temporary physical paralysis.

Key Safety Recommendations for Patrons:

·         Verify Service: Only accept drinks handed directly to you by licensed bar staff or servers; do not consume shared beverages or accept open drinks from strangers.

·         Maintain Visual Contact: Never leave a beverage unattended. If stepping away from a table or heading to the restroom, take your drink along or discard it.

·         Utilize Protective Measures: Consider using beverage covers or rapid-testing strips designed to detect common tampering agents.

·         Recognize Early Symptoms: Seek immediate medical or staff assistance if you or a peer suddenly experience unexplained dizziness, severe nausea, cognitive confusion, or sudden intoxication disproportionate to alcohol intake.

·         Practice the Buddy System: Watch for efforts by strangers to isolate an impaired friend, and assist anyone who appears vulnerable, distressed, or disoriented.

The Boston Police Department emphasizes that anyone who suspects their beverage has been tampered with, or who witnesses suspicious behavior in or around entertainment venues, should contact 911 immediately. Victims of suspected drink spiking are urged to seek emergency medical attention and report the incident promptly to assist ongoing investigations.
